“7 Wonders of St Helena” forms a part of the ‘Proud of St Helena” campaign launched on St Helena’s Day, 21st May 2008. The campaign is designed to build national pride by encouraging St Helenian’s to be more positive about themselves and their island and in turn convey a positive image and message to our visitors. The main objectives of the “Proud of St Helena Campaign” is to improve the image of St. Helena through St. Helenian's’; to showcase St. Helenian's achievements’ ; to educate and promote best practice in our jobs, businesses and our environment and to encourage people to reacquaint themselves with the iconic and historic events and attractions on St. Helena. 7 Wonders of St Helena allowed St Helenian's everywhere (and lovers of St Helena) the chance to nominate their favorite iconic / historic / scenic / built "place of wonder" that would symbolically represent St Helena in future tourism promotion. Over the past few months we have asked YOU to take pride in your island by nominating and voting for such places. Your votes totaled 2,067 and a total of 60 nominations were suggested during the first round of the campaign. Week by week we saw places shuffle back and forth fighting for top places as you continued to vote. First round nominations closed on Friday 8th August, short listing the 60 nominations with the most votes down to your top 15 finalists. In a last push for votes many of you took part in the St Helena Independent Lucky draw, which allowed readers of the Independent on St Helena a chance to enter a draw for £25. The draw was done live on Saint FM on Friday 8th August and the lucky winner was Anna Hopkins. The top 15 finalist was announced live on Saint FM on Friday 8th August. >> |

Six weeks of voting commenced to establish the final 7 wonders of St Helena from 8th August to the 18th September and the announcement was made live on Saint FM by Miss St Helena, Nicole Peters and Director of Tourism, Pamela Young. Two weeks prior to the broadcast the Independent and Saint Fm launched a Hugh sweepstake campaign with co-sponsorship with Printech and the proud of St Helena Campaign. 1200 sweepstake slips were printed and distributed to numerous newspaper outlets island wide and a two week publicity campaign launched for the event. At just 50p a ticket, participants stood a chance of winning up to £600 in cash. Sweepstake slips doubled at a voting sheet and players participating in the game also inevitably contributed to the final votes in determining the top 7. Sweepstakes closed on Thursday 18th September and on the following Friday all monies and slips were collected from outlets and tallied. Following the live announcement of the 7 wonders, the draw for the winner of the sweepstakes took place, with 896 slips entered into the draw and a jackpot of £457.50 going to Shirley Robinson of Half Tree Hollow. In the final count, 7785 votes were cast over the 6 week period via Saint FM webpage, newspaper sweepstakes and at the Tourism Office. A thank you to everyone who took part in the campaign and to everyone that voted.
