STFM Listeners Choice

Saint FM prides itself in having provided community projects especially designed with radio listeners in mind.  We always strive to connect Saints closer to home and bring about community spirit and interactive through radio.   The Saint FM Listeners Choice Award was very successful and the response from our listeners on the night was overwhelming.  After Months of planning the team at Saint FM were able to produce an entertaining and fun programme that gave listeners a chance to have a say of the 'people's choice' for Miss St Helena.

Nicole Peters was crowned Miss St Helena 2008 and also became the first winner of the Saint FM Listeners Choice Award.

On Saturday, 17th May 2008 Nicole Peters was crowned Miss St Helena 2008.  The event was broadcasted LIVE for the first time worldwide to Saints living and working in every corner of the globe on Saint FM. In addition, the Saint FM Listeners Choice Award was introduced to allow our listeners the opportunity to cast a vote for their favourite of the thirteen contestants taking part in the Contest. A truly historic and unique broadcast. The vote meant that any of the thirteen contestants had the potential to be the winner. Forming the basis of a ‘people’s choice vote’ the new award, was a call-in vote, voting on the contestants interviews and live comments on the night. To help put a face to the contestant’s name, the Independent also printed a special colour insert of photos. Listeners were invited to participate via email or telephone and lines officially opened shortly after the start of the live broadcast from the Consulate Hotel.

Commentators for the night were Emma-Jane Yon in studio overseeing the voting system and Tony Leo volunteering to be at the Consulate as our eyes for the radio on evening. Technical engineer’s at the Consulate were Mike Olsson and Mark Heron. With the support and help of Cable & Wireless South Atlantic Ltd we were also able to have two additional phone lines installed to ensure no vote was missed and four voluntary operators gave up their seats at the Consulate to take your calls. Our very busy operators on the evening were: Bernice Olsson, Donna Crowie, Charlie Herne and Leigh Richards. The votes were tallied and verified by Emma-Jane Yon and Donna Crowie, before Emma-Jane ran to the Consulate during the third interval to present our award, especially designed and created by Joseph Scipio of Half Tree Hollow.

In all 1,199 votes were received during a 3 hour voting period via phone and email from listeners on island, Ascension, Falklands and as far as Germany, France, Canada and Saints living and working in the UK. Of the 1,199 votes received, 335 votes went to our winner Nicole Peters; following Nicole was Sharilyn Moyce with a total of 230 votes, Tessa Roberts with 124 votes and Helen Joshua with 122 votes. The remaining 9 contestants received 388 votes collectively, numbers ranging anything from 10 to 85 votes a girl.

A huge thank you to everyone who called or emailed in on the night, your enthusiasm and support was overwhelming and greatly appreciated. Thank you to all our helpers and supporters of this event and thank you once again to the readers and listeners of the St Helena Independent and Saint FM.
