The start of an Era

Father Chris & Lolly Yon at the opening night

Official Opening

After three months of test transmissions pumping out continuous music with the odd free advert 24/7, Saint FM officially opened with scheduled broadcasts on Monday, 3rd January 2005.  Kick starting the day was Angela Williams doing her first morning show "the wake up mix" from 6 to 9 am, followed by Emma-Jane Yon and the lunch time show from 11- 2pm.   Local news bulletins, started being broadcasted three times a day on Tuesday, 4th.

The official opening to the public happened the following Monday evening on the 10th January, where some 80 guests were invited to attend the opening ceremony and party on Saint FM's new premises - Association Hall, Main Street. >>

Brother Dale Bowers addressed guests, including His Excellency the Governor, Bishop John and the former Honourable Speaker, Mr John Newman OBE, and said how pleased he was to see an independent media in St Helena, which was not financed by Government and had no strings attached to other bodies.

Afterwards guests were invited to have a guided tour of the newly furnished studios and offices.

For Saint FM, the opening of the Station in Association Hall was a start of a venture and not a completed project.  Mr Basil George, OBE, called the opening a “starting gun” for the independent media project.  Now through the legacy of the late John Drummond, a major influence on media development in St Helena, we have been able to continue to produce and develop Saint FM and the Independent.
